  • Tools can not depend on other tools. One of the issues with traditional distributions is dependency resolution and package management (this is subcategory of a heavily discussed topic, I also talked about it in my LAS talk from 2025. We should avoid making individual packages or having dependencies between tools, to avoid all the unnecessary complexity that comes with it.

I was getting excited about this, but this point might be a big dealbreaker. The C compiler for example will need to find manually installed headers and library files when you need to compile more than a hello world, and often tightly interacts with pkg-config, cmake etc.

I fear you’d have to be working in a container anyway for some scenarios, unless there’s some other parts not explained in the post.

I’m also not a fan of the possible gatekeeping of who can create these tools, via signing and trusted repositories, but it’s probably going to be fine in the end.

TBH toolbx is quite a good environment to work in already. I would just have liked a bit more sandboxing though (i.e. have a way for it to not mount my home)

  • IMHO the entire injection procedure is to keep it “clean” and socially accepted. Very few people would be happy to see somebody being shot in the head, but seeing somebody “falling asleep” is much more “ok”. It looks less violent even though the end result is the same. Surviving a lethal injection and waking up again in that nightmare must be horrible.

The reality is that death penalty is cruel and more costly than keeping someone in prison for life, and this doesn’t even consider the human cost of executing an innocent. It just doesn’t make sense.

  • You usually find software on https://flathub.org/ The flatpak command line tools also gets it by default from there.

Generally it’s best to use the software provided already by your distros because it’s more vetted than flathub. Use flatpak for stuff it’s not provided by your distro.

Flatpak apps are usually sandboxed so they won’t be able to fully take over your pc if you read the permissions they ask. You have to triple-check the permissions they require during installation, because they will be shown only at that point.

If you want to restrict or widen the sandbox I reccommend flatseal https://flathub.org/en/apps/com.github.tchx84.Flatseal

Also, like any 3rd party software on any operating system, you can’t know for sure if they are mining bitcoin or abuse your internet. Even websites can make your pc or phone mine crypto or try to launch DoS attacks. Be careful, look at reviews and check the permissions tgey ask for, like you would do with mac os/windows software.

  • I found that SICP (lisp version) is very math focused and in general LISP/scheme as a language is not very relevant anymore.

I’d reccommend against it if you think math or theorethical concepts are not for you or if you want to solve practical problems from the get go.

It’s a very good and complete coursebook though. It covers almost anything on how “computation” works, and you learn all the base the concepts you find in almost any other programming languages.

  • Don’t be discouraged by the starting difficulty and ridiculous crafting chains (laugh at how ridiculous they are instead). There’s plenty of quality of life in there to make it less painful.

I would suggest to start with the 2.9 beta instead of 2.8.4, they improved a lot of the painful things at the start of the game.

Btw if you don’t like combat absolutely play in peaceful and change configs to make it less dark or straight up cheat items in if it becomes too grindy for you.

It’s a 2000 hour journey not a sprint and there’s plenty of content even if you cheat in resources or (tier-appropriate) items.

A similar modpack I am playing and I can reccommend is Star technology. It’s a gregtech-based skyblock mod. It’s very nice if you think GTNH is too painful.

  • I also found it useful to do some one-off batch processing of a big file without thinking of chunking and doing too complicated things. Imagine something like a 60GB file in a custom format that need to be deduplicated. It’s easier to just load it all up in memory and do run the algorithm 2-3x slower using a 50GB swapfile than spend hours to complicate the algorithm.

  • I fully expect this to become the new normal being pushed by management.

“We identified PR reviews to be blocking our newfound AI-powered efficiency, so we are now mandating all the reviews to done by AI. Also we figured all the developers are now useless since all you do is ask Claude to solve tickets, so you are all fired”

I wonder how long it takes for the first high profile disaster happening because of a policy like that.

  • Mainstream news are all negative. If you are struggling to see a light at the end of the tunnel, try to look up newspapers/publications with only positive news. A lot of them don’t get reported at all by normal media.

I know it’s strange to hear, but while I expect a lot of pain in the short term, I expect things will be better in the longer term (20+ years).
