Sway? Cosmic? OpenBox? KDE? Like, look up some DEs, look up themes on Pling, and pick your favorite. Try them out in a VM.
Cinnamon has made opinionated choices based on the majority of their demographic (newbie users). If you aren’t a fan, pick something else.

About the only semi-exception is immutable distros, which can easily swap out the system layer. I’ve done it, and only had minor jank.
Still, it’s better to know what you want ahead of time, if you want an opinionated installation; VMs and live ISOs are good for testing other DEs. Otherwise, you might as well get ready to do it the way Arch users do it.
Second this idea. I did exactly this and found out that MX Linux’s default DE config doesn’t work correctly OotB for my setup.

If you want to avoid this judgement, get an Apple silicon Macbook Air or something…
Or save a few bucks, buy whatever laptop in silver, cover the logo with a sticker, and use elementaryOS or theme your DE to be Mac-like.

Good plan, and don’t mention that you use Linux. Just leave it nebulous so they don’t think they can “voluntell” you to install Windows instead.

I’ll have to check. I have a laptop running Bazzite, but I don’t recall its ujust recipes including dev tooling. I think Aurora/Bluefin and Bazzite have different sets of commands.
Unrelated question: I like Bazzite, but I would really like to also have the Dev tooling of Aurora DX. Does Aurora use the same fsync kernel as Bazzite? Have/do you do any gaming on Aurora? If so, how has it been?

Just open source v1.7 and let the community make their “openLight” version. They said they’re moving to custom libraries anyway, and people would be able to keep buying their products, so doesn’t seem like they stand to lose much by going the open source/abandonware route.
Also, they will likely not appreciate having a lone user with a unique attack surface.

I’m aware of the controversy. I haven’t had issues, and neither has anyone else that has mentioned they use it (I would think if they were logging and selling user data, the Movie and Music industries would be customers #1 and #2, and we’d hear about ISP letters more often). Still, it’s a factor to consider in one’s threat model, and I would be lying if I said I was completely comfortable with their past.
I can, actually, but I’d rather use WireGuard for the improved throughput. There’s no “enabling” Private Internet Access’s client, though, because it’s a self-executing tarball and install script, and that’s the only way to access their WG endpoints.
They have a manual connection client through the command line, but that hasn’t been updated in over two years, and I don’t feel comfortable using it.
So, genuine question: why btrfs instead of zfs? Sounds like your use case would fit the latter.
