I agree - their approach towards the rest of the world is so very entitled that no person outside of that state can take them seriously anymore. It’s like they think that the world owes them something, while in reality the Brits have a pretty large amount of atonement in their todo list.

To be fair, there’s a group of very shady instances out there, but on the other hand, those are all defederated as soon as they pop up. I am certain that LLMs are a step into the direction of AGI, but it’s a small piece of the puzzle. There are so many technological leaps that have to happen before AGI can become real that I am certain that neither of us will see that day.

If you have such an open mind, then please also read the paper they released, which is a lot more careful in how all of this is framed. This article is here to drive VC funding, not for scientific accuracy, and this is not the first time Anthropic has framed things in a sensationalist way that had no basis in the reality of the paper. You think those companies have any shred of decency? Even if they could prove without a doubt that these statistical models are more than just that - that wouldn’t change a thing in how they were used. And regarding the global economy: the only “global economy” thing i can see at the moment is a group of companies that are overvalued because of circular cash flows and artificial hype that stems from an assumption that LLMs can somehow become AGI, which would inflate the value of those companies into infinity. We are currently not even able to measure a ROI for these things, and companies worldwide are pulling emergency breaks in usage because of the costs, which are not even covering what the inference itself costs. The only “Global” thing here will be the crash, fucking up the DIY PC market for a decade or longer.

I am educated enough to know my statistics, the workings of LLMs and enough science for a bacc. in molecular biology. I don’t need to be a frontier researcher to recognize the difference between the laid out facts in the paper and the suggestions they make in this article, which are simply there to keep the LLM-hype train going and to make sure VC keeps flowing.

It’s really interesting. The old web was the wild west, and back then you really had to know where to look for shady stuff (except the morons who put it on the open web and were sacked by the respective authorities). As long as there is no space for air to get trapped between the glass and a reflector, it’s no issue to put it on the inside (although its more effective when on the outside) - those foils that can be put on the window using a little bit of water do a good job. Biggest problem are dark objects when only away a few centimeters from the glass - those will crack the window in no time.

This isn’t wishful thinking. This is a disaster that will not even touch the AI bubble; it will simply wipe out many smaller, innovative producers of PC components that don’t have enough reserves to keep running until the DIY-market at least somewhat recovers.

The prices for NAND and DRAM will continue to rise until there aren’t enough buyers left to pick up the massive tab of purchasing inventory, which will be the first wave of dying companies; memory stick makers at large will probably be fine UNTIL the bubble pops, which will make all of their remaining inventory practically unsellable at the price needed to not take a massive loss - the longer the bubble goes, the harder the ones left will be hit.

What is more devastating is that we will lose so many PC component producers in the meanwhile. Buying a specific, nonstandard case or some flashy cooling solution will simply not be possible in a few years, because all of those businesses will have died out, with the rapidly shrinking DIY market as a reason. Especially case producers will be hit hard: low margin, physically large items with huge storage costs are a recipe for a catastrophe in a shrinking DIY market. If anyone wants to get some specific PC accessories because you always wanted them, buy them now, because in a year you probably won’t be able to.

As i said, they already had to take up loans to even have product to sell - just so that their own manufacturing doesn’t simply stop. Those weren’t small loans - 3 Taiwanese DRAM producers alone had to take up 880 million dollars in loans. Selling Ramsticks itself is a pretty low-margin business; If they cannot sell the products they took the loans for at least at the cost + interest, they are pretty fucked, since reducing the price will not help them in their situation. This situation will repeat in the storage sector, and if those two sectors get wiped, it will have a domino effect on every business in the DIY-PC market, because at that point no company that sells PC parts will make sales anymore. No need to buy processors, mainboards, cooling, cases and so on if you don’t have the funds to buy such essentials as ram and storage.

To be fair, who is collapsing will not be SK Hynix, Micron and Samsung. The companies that get shafted are those where people buy their ramsticks and NAND storage from: Sandisk, G.Skill, Corsair and many others. Those had to take up debt to have enough cash on hand to buy products to sell because of the soaring prices, and if the amount of cash they have to ask for to cover the price of doing business is higher that what costumers are willing to pay, they get stuck with unsellable product and a bunch of loans.

They only need subsidies because the costs of fossil fuels get externalized. If every fossil fuel company had to sequester all the CO2 they just dump into the atmosphere, they would probably go bankrupt.
