  • Went to Linux when I was a teenager, went back to Windows.

My return however is a lot more bittersweet. One of my cats died. The other cat went into mourning. Wanted to keep him company while doing my shit, so I took my old laptop and installed Xubuntu on it. While I was using it I realised that Linux had come a long, long way since I last used it and I could use it as a daily driver. Got a new laptop soon after and installed Mint on it.

Then Windows on my main PC started demanding I update. Realised I couldn’t afford to, both software and hardware wise, so I decided to go full Linux. Never looked back. Typing this on my Laptop running Fedora while I try kill time before an interview.

TL;DR: I came back to Linux because I wanted to hang out with my cat while he mourned.

  • ID Cards are a big hot button issue in the UK. We only really had them in the UK during the Second World War as a matter of national security, but after that they were scrapped.

Basically this document will not stop illegal working (because you know, people who hire illegal workers don’t check paperwork) but what they will do is link everything to your card, especially with the Online Safety Act. Said something like “Palestine Action shouldn’t be Proscribed”? You can be flagged and the Cops can notice that when they scan your card. Transgender? That can be flagged and the Cops will treat you differently.

Add to that the idea of a Politcal Party like Reform getting into power and you can imagine how much of a clusterfuck this will be if they decide to have a “War on Woke”.

  • If I were to describe the UK, it would be as three and a bit countries in a trench coat and the country in control of the legs are constantly trying to run onto a busy motorway no matter what.

The UK has always been Orwellian, it’s just the way they justify their Orwellian shit that changes. This is the third government I’ve lived under that has advocated for ID Cards and the next government (Reform) is going to use this and the OSA to absolutely fuck people over.

  • Utopia maybe impossible, but improvement is always better.

Also, almost? Right now I’m accessing this through a VPN because my government has mandated that every single social media website or website with a search feature put up an age gate for anything pornographic or has “sensitve content” for the “protection of children”, meaning to operate in the UK, every social media company has to higher a third party to scan a picture of your face or your passport or ID.

Also, This same government actively wants to strip away basic rights like access to public toilets, hospital treatment, support services, and even things like sports, and believe I and others like me are such a threat they’re gonna bring back Section 28.

    So yeah, Dystopia is here.

  • Amongst socialists back then there was a big prohibition movement. The Scottish Prohibition party, who had one MP until the 30s was a firmly socialist party and there was a form relationship between the Temperance movement in The UK and Socialist ideals. Basically the reason was because they saw alcohol as a tool against the working class wherein the ruling class kept them addicted and drunk to prevent them from self improvement while making money off them.

Even today, a lot of Anarchists are straight edge for similar reasons, plus the idea that drinking and drugs means they close control of their faculties and this, autonomy.
