That also shocked me. Then again, Windows does suck pretty bad.

I’m slowly starting to post on the .ee one…

As a certified witch hunter and anti-magic enthusiast, I simply CANNOT cosign such a method.
I think those are great ideas, especially the one about admins selecting if/how many users they want to take.
I wonder about asking questions though… Maybe, as long as the users are redirected to the instance directly, instead of being sent to a list of servers that match their answers (as is the case, currently), that would be great. I’m just not sure people want to be answering a bunch of questions before even joining!
If someone just wants to, say, browse for a bit, and doesn’t understand Mastodon (didn’t go to an instance directly to begin with), then maybe they’d rather just be redirected automagically rather than have to answer a bunch of questions when they don’t even intend to sign-up.
Setting up new users with certain communities or hashtags is definitely nice to help with the empty feed problem.
if comments on previous mastodon focused posts are anything to go by, very rarely accept changes to UI/UX
Yikes…
Fair point, language does make a big difference. I’m not one to come up with the best word for it, though…
Other fediverse portals can learn this lesson too.
Definitely. I originally made this post about Lemmy as well, actually, but I decided to keep it focused on Mastodon.
This is fair, but I think misguided.
Twitter is huge. Regardless of whether it’s huge because of celebrities or because randos like to post is, in my opinion, mostly irrelevant. I rarely post on there, but I do browse it quite often because it’s an easy way to keep up with a bunch of things I’m interested in. I suspect I’m not alone in this. Many extremely popular memes also come from Twitter, which I think highlights how big of a cultural hub it is.
Then again, maybe you’re right and this sort of social media isn’t very good. Genuinely, I don’t know.
For the record, though, I also think selecting servers automatically should be a Lemmy feature.
Tyler themselves has several instances, including hosting other alternative frontends.
