Femicide is not defined as men killing women. It is defined as the killing of women or girls on the basis of their gender and is considered a hate crime. This change is just saying that hate part is enough to promote it to murder. The rest of the news release is talking about intimate partner violence and doesn’t specify the gender of the victim nor the perpetrator.
I actually really like that they don’t add claims to their articles that haven’t been verified. While I don’t doubt that management is using tactics that we’d find distasteful, I wouldn’t want CBC to report this without really hard proof (more than a hunch or a feeling of common sense).
