I get trying to make an old school, grindy RPG, but it just fell flat.

Grimstone from UFO 50 is the game I point to for how to do a retro RPG well. Hell, all of UFO 50 is fantastic, I home there’s a sequel.

I was excited for the first one, played about 65% of it & it became a chore so I quit. Never played the second, figured it was more of the same.

I’ll wait for the complete series special edition once they finish Red Piece and Blue Piece.

If you want something completely different, try the Megaman Battle Network games. Using today’s descriptors they are “Tactical Action Deckbuilders”, and although a few games have tried, I haven’t found anything that quite scratches the same itch.

• The Mega Man Zero games are hard AF, but rewarding when you do well.

Have you tried Tunic? It’s probably the closest non-Zelda game to scratch the Zelda itch for me.
