I don’t think regular Arch is the best for new Linux users at all but their are a few Arch based distros with graphical installers.

I’d you are trfh savvy, the Arch install process should be ok though.

Of the 2 you suggested, u would go with Kubuntu. KDE is a very popular desktop environment and Ubuntu is solid. I’ve moved distros quite a bit but always go back to Ubuntu-based. I’ve been on Mint for the last 6 or so years.

A long time ago I pirated because I was poor and wanted to play Skyrim and stuff. I’d download movies occasionally too but streaming services came along and I mostly didn’t need to pirate anymore. Then the streaming industry boomed and the enshitification started. I got real sick, real fast with not being able to fined common movies that were either exclusive to a service I didn’t have or was behind a paywall of some other sorts.

So, I donned the hat again, beefed up security wit ha VPN, got a 6 TB hard drive, set up both Jellyfin and Plex(I need my IP addy to log into Jellyfin and kids and partner don’t know how to retrieve that so Plex is the backup.) and went back to the high seas. I pay substantially less to watch almost anything I want, than to trudge through 7 different streaming apps trying to find that one movie or show. It helps when you realize pirating against streaming apps only hurts those companies and not the creators themselves(unless you take all of the services originals into account, which is a cache 22 since anything that would catch my eye got cancelled after 2 seasons).

I settled on Cinnamon after jumping around a bit. I do still like Gnome though even if both are fairly bulky DEs.

I used to use Sublime for notes and then VSCode and those types of text editors work just fine for non code stuff imo. VSCode even has syntax highlighting for Markdown so could be a plus for OP.

I was super lucky apparently because my degree’s curriculum required C# and ASP.NET, on top of our CTO having a big bug up his ass and hitting the switch that disallowed Linux computers to connect to the wifi. Even connecting Macbooks was a huge headache I guess. Dude didn’t fucking care and would just jerk himself off about how hardened the school’s network was.

My laptop was really shitty too but I ended up running Windows 7 in a VM just to get by. But had to do a lot of bullshit between OSes and in the end, it would have just been way better if I had just bit the bullet and used Windows for the time I was there.

I’m probably an outlier and today it’s probably better but if your school gets kickbacks from M$ and you are going for programming just expect it I guess.

LIbreOffice’s .docx formatting sucks when going between it and M$ Word too but someone else already mentioned that.

Not gonna lie, I thought elementaryOS was gonna take off and I guess it never did. I used it on my school laptop when I was in college for most of the time there. It was fine but mostly just a sleaker looking Mint basically.

Been using Linux for over a decade and I will never go back lol.
