  • I read the manuals for everything now. I think it’s because when I was a kid videogames used to come with great manuals and half the fun was just reading through those. One of my favourites was for the original Heavy Gear on PC. that thing was like a hybrid manual and lore bible. Or old Flight Sim games with manuals that were as thick as text books.

    Now you don’t get shit.

  • I think when you first get into Linux it’s a valid thing. you want to find the distro that you’re most comfortable with.

When I first started using linux I tried them all and eventually just settled on Arch because it felt right to me. That being said I don’t knock anyone who uses whatever. A good friend of mine online uses Slackware and he loves it, it works for him. There’s no “wrong” distro, it’s whatever works for you. you have to initially hop around though to find that though.

Also distro hopping is great when it comes to helping people, especially new linux users. I’ve made many friends within the community because for a solid year I just hopped all over the place and tried to learn it all.

  • I remember years and years ago when I still a regular employee I got into work one morning to find I no longer had access to any git repos. nothing. Well already knew the reason right then and there. I usually got in before everyone else so by the time people were coming into the office I was packing my stuff up to leave. People were all “where are you going?” I said “well I either got fired or laid off so I’m leaving, I’m not sitting through a bullshit meeting telling me why I was laid off”

wiped the laptop, wiped my externals, walked out, went and sat in a coffee shop to revise my resume. I got a call like an hour later asking me where I was and why I didn’t attend the meeting I was apparently schedule for. I replied with “you laid me off” few minutes later they email me back saying they’ll just send my ROE and last paycheque in the mail and then proceeded to explain why I and a few other devs were laid off. I didn’t bother reading the rest of it.

Then I decided to become a freelancer and never looked back. best decision I made.

What REALLY annoyed me about the whole thing was I thought I was good friends with the IT guy that set up access to everything, he was the one that revoked my access the night before and didn’t tell me. I was literally having a beer with him that night and he never said a word. out of everything that hurt the most. never spoke to him again.

  • yeah it’s weird cause the music player thing was also a hang up for me too. I liked cmus cause it was simple but some of the things in it annoyed me. I liked Audcacious or whatever its’ called cause I could install old winamp skins on it.

Eventually though I just ended up making my own TUI that has all the features I personally want. This seems to be a theme for me and linux. I always find things that have features I like but their separate apps so then I just combine all those features into something I build myself.

  • why wait? I was hoping you americans would have acted by now but…psh I’m not holding my breathe anymore. almost any other country would be rioting, violently, right now but you guys have zero leaders to rally anything. and any thing close to an opposition leader you have is saying “just wait for the midterms!” yeah…ok buddy either you’ll be lucky if your dear leader allows midterms to happen OR they do, dems win across the board, but most of this shit goes into effect AFTER said midterms thus the nazi’s blame the dems for everything and ensure glorious leader wins a 3rd term.

shit I’ll be surprised if most of you guys are still working, eating, not in a camp, or hell even alive by that point.
