Back when I worked font desk at a hotel, our ancient phone system had a “flaw” where if you transferred someone to an extension that didn’t exist in the system, it would ring for 30 seconds then transfer the call back to the front.

If my usual attempts to diffuse the situation failed, usually because the person was actively looking to abuse someone, I’d say, “Please hold while I transfer you to someone who can help.” Then send it to ext 1234 which didn’t exist.

When the call inevitably routed back to me, I’d say, “I’m sorry, it looks like they didn’t pick up, let me transfer you again,” without giving them a chance to speak.

Rinse and repeat until they hung up.

I also helped out the nice customers by giving them a free microwave and mini fridge, since I was also the bellman who set those up. Usually it was $20 each, which is bullshit.
