I think the one who took the picture was using a telephoto lens. His thought process was probably along the lines of “I have a good 30 second head start on these guys, and the first one to go is probably the guy tripping over himself in the back closest to the bear.”

Is running from a bear a good strategy? I’m no expert, but they seem a lot faster.

I had not considered the possibility that the bear was more horny than hungry.

No expert either but I wondered the same. I heard that running will trigger their hunting behaviour, because running is associated with fleeing pray. But on the other hand, if the bear already decided to charge them anyways, what else is there to do?

If you’re in close proximity of an aggressive bear, you have already missed all the good strategies. Why start then?
Damnit brian, have a bit of self respect, you’re a national geographic photographer, let those guys take their photos on your turf, even if they’ve got better gear than you.
