Ozymandias was an idiot. He pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war and then caused a massive explosion in New York under the assumption that the US government would calmly and methodically investigate the wreckage instead of just assuming that the war had already started and launching a counterattack. The only reason his plan worked was because he was a fictional character in a story who’s author was as big of an idiot as he was.
The idiot was Zack Snyder, not the actual author of Watchmen, Alan Moor.
In the comics, vv this vv is what Ozymandias manufactured to trick the world into peaceful deescalation. A supposed alien for all of humanity to unite against.
But that’s too cartoony for Snyder, so he changed it to something more “realistic”, ironically undermining the believability of the story.
In the movie it was a nuclear explosion made to look like Dr Manhattan caused it. In the comic book, it was an alien invasion that brought humanity together.
The TV series follows the comic’s premise and ignores the events of the movie.

Did Ozymandias touch you in a bad place?
It’s not your fault.
