Better headline: “Trump whining about NATO again, still not realizing that 66% of congress needs to approve it.”

He cannot be relied upon if Article 5 is invoked anyway, so all the other NATO countries are just waiting for him to keel over and die.

In the mean time, JATEC continues to coordinate doctrines, personnel keeps training, and the command structure remains. This too shall pass, despite of this ass.

People are waiting for Trump to die so that all this nastiness will all go away magically. It won’t, Trump is a symptom and not a cause. Anyone planning to rely on US for military protection in the future has to account for Americans voting for a mentally ill influencer for a president.

Yes and no, Trump is a side effect, not a symptom. The actual coup happening has been decades in the making and been done by people like Mitch McConnell. Trump, and his handlers like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller co-opted the movement, in much the same way that RFK co-opted the make America healthy again movement.

When Trump steps aside or dies, or whatever, it’s going to create a power vacuum in a system that wasn’t created to handle Trump in the first place. The entire system is going to fracture as the original coup participants try to take back over, the Vances of the world try to continue the movement, and the rest of the people who were only in it because of the mentally ill influencer who’s books they thought were the absolute pinnacle of business stop paying attention to politics again.

As if anyone thinks US would honour Article 5 with current administration, lol. NATO is as good as dead so this is an empty threat, which is about as much as US can do these days.

Good, fuck off then. With Russia weaker than ever we don’t need you anymore.

Good luck in your war against China, when you cant even beat Iran without NATO support lmao.

    Let it.

At this point the US is more akin to an anchor to everyone in the world than a leader

Let it isolate itself from the rest of the world, see what happens

I never thought I’d support the USA leaving NATO.

But they’re better off without us at this point. Maybe at some point, hat in our hands and humbled, we can ask for re-entry to the Org. But we really should get out as-is, we’re worse than dead weight. We’re internal sabotage.

I think at this point we are a couple of European councils away from the rest of the partners asking him to leave.

TBH, I’m not against this. For Europe, NATO is a defense alliance mostly concerned with Russian aggression. For the US, NATO is a tool of imperialism. Trump said in this article that the reason he’s considering leaving is that NATO countries didn’t assist in the Iran war. The implication is that NATO is for supporting US interests or the US doesn’t honor their obligations.

I think that a European alliance shouldn’t be led by a non-european power. I think that the US should reduce its defense commitments abroad and lean on the fact that the US is one of the most easily defended countries on earth. The problem is that Trump doesn’t want to pull out of NATO to lower US defense spending. He just wants to re-write the world order to put himself on top.

One big problem here is that there isn’t a current mechanism for a country to leave NATO. It would weaken the credibility of the alliance if a country could back out whenever they felt like it. There are 2 ways this could be solved:

    1. Amend the treaty so that the other countries could kick out an existing member rather than allow the US to withdraw.
    2. Create a new NATO with everything the same except the US is no longer part of it.

I think either of these would open up a lot of chaos because countries would want to seize the opportunity to remove other problematic members like Hungary or Turkey. It could undermine the unity and credibility of the alliance.
