Its amazing the lengths Microsoft will go to force updates on users, and yet at work we regularly have devices where the latest updates fail to install because Windows update is a pile of shit

    Okay, but why would you:
    a) use machine learning for rolling out an update,
    b) tell your users that you’re using machine learning, and
    c) not call it “AI-based”, so that your investors throw more money at you?

What happened to Microsoft’s promise to not force updates on its users? What about their admission they screwed up their system with AI? Did they forget?

Never mind the sentiment of people here. This isn’t going to fly with business customers eventually, either.

User: How about I’m ready when I say I’m ready?
Microsoft: Nah, don’t worry this will only take a few minutes…

What worries me about this, and other update systems is, as an advanced user, I should be at the front of the line to get updates, not because I deserve them more than you do (speaking to someone who is not an advanced user, not someone who is browsing a technology community on Lemmy) but because I’m gonna report the bugs and hopefully you get a more stable update.

A lot of apps (VLC being a popular one) have a button in the settings that says “I am an advanced user” which gives you access to settings that can worsen the app experience in some cases. I think operating systems should have this. Take the kid gloves off and treat me like the expert user I claim to be. With Windows, this is kind of gated behind a purchase. That kind of user should buy Windows Pro, but most of those users realise Windows Home is good enough. Even so, buying Pro doesn’t mean you get the updates first (or can defer them longer if that is your goal).
