There is no such thing as free email, either you are the purchaser or you are the product! If you are the product bots are looking through your mail to send you and the sender ads. I am looking into self hosting my domain and email so that I am not relying on a third party to host it, but I do see your point about not wanting to loss an address.
I’m not so sure with TutaMail, ProtonMail, or other privacy or non-American are privacy invasive. The trade off from what I understanding is that get you less free space.

Did not know that they had free options. I have more than 200 email addresses that forward to 6 primary email addresses.
