I kind of understand fashion shows with exotic outfits not meant to show off things people will actually wear but just to make a statement within an artform.

I will not now, not ever understand the wankery at car shows where automakers will design concept cars not even close to anything a human being will ever be regularly driving. Yeah, some artistic design goes into a car, but even more than fashion, the designs are constrained predominantly by engineering challenges.

It’s just: “Hey, I know we’re intentionally ruining the planet and bribing/extorting your governments to let us, but maybe one day it’ll be cloaked in the aesthetic of a shitty sci-fi utopia instead of a shitty sci-fi dystopia.”

Concept cars are mainly built to get media attention. There are also different kinds of concept cars. Some are just fantasies, summer are actual previews of future models.
