I’m trying to move a lot of my social media habits to the Fediverse in light of digital ID/mass surveillance bills being pushed in Canada, and I remember hearing about Pinetta, a federated Pinterest alternative awhile back. Does anyone know what’s happened to it? It doesn’t look to have had any updates in a few years. I’m wondering if it’s been abandoned?
Does anyone know of any other federated Pinterest alternatives? Pinterest has been how a lot of small businesses survive over the years. It’d be wonderful if there was a federated alternative to it.

That makes sense. Both in terms of their market and how you could integrate it with your work.
That being said, its not a very a good visual search engine, I am thinking more in terms research type work and I understand that’s not how people use Pinterest and their needs maybe be focused on more general tasks and Pinterest features are good enough for the mass market.
For some reason, whenever I encounter Pinterest the first thing that comes to mind is a Potemkin village. The internal contractions of their platform are just jarring. Their whole business works on images of others, yet the have the most annoying system for limiting easy access to the source image and nagging for nagging to register.
Haha yeah it’s definitely not perfect. I think the ones who reap the most benefits from Pinterest are bloggers, who promote their products in their blog posts. Another thing is that I think about 80%ish of their traffic comes from Google. If there was some kind of Federated alternative, ideally, Google wouldn’t be involved in being responsible for the success of it. I’d love to see someone try to make something better than Pinterest though. More federation options for small business would be amazing so we have a place to survive outside of big tech. Flohmarkt is looking to be a good solution to that though! Just gotta get some servers up in Canada 😄
