Wait… Supergirl is out?? I watched Superman like 9 times.
Supergirl came out? Shit I thought it was a few weeks out.
Im so isolated from ads I have no idea what’s playing but the boys and I are definitely interested in seeing it
James gunn didn’t direct/write it, so it apparently doesn’t have that same humor/heart.
Its also adapted off a seminal Supergirl comic book that was renown for its breathtaking art. The medium shift into a movie made replicating that art sytle impossible, so its not living up to its source material very well.
Impossible? No one told them to make it fifty shades of brown.
The director also never bothered to read the source material.
Ah, one of those. I sure ‘Loved’ what they did to Halo with that technique.
With executives so far up their own asses, nothing will ever meet “expectations”. Ffs its number two at the box office even though its more superhero bull, but still not good enough for them.
It’s not a good movie tho. It feels like the same old dc movie. I’ll be surprised if it recovers half of it’s budget.
Yes that was my point. It was just another superhero movie and still number 2. They put in minimal effort and still somehow tripped into the number two spot, but they’re still crying that it’s not enough.
DC is cursed imo
DC hates itself. That’s been the main overarching theme of everything they’ve produced since 1985. They’ll pat themselves on the back for having characters with decades of history but make it clear that they think that every part of that history prior to the most recent reboot is crap that nobody should read, and most of the reboot will be dedicated to raking the character’s past over the coals. Comic fans seem to go in for that sort of thing, but general audiences don’t.
…Maybe they’re squeezing too much out?
I mean, I love DCAU as much as anyone, but they can only retread and “retry” so often. We don’t need so many DC films, or if we do, make them original.
I get that their commercial target is “MCU.” Thing is, MCU is an overgrown abomination now.
corpo filmmaking, however full of well-meaning devotees to the source is always cursed.
I mean, people are pretty burnt out on the superhero scene… and Superman is some of the most bland content the superhero scene has to offer… and ___girl seems to always flop anyway cuz people still get butthurt about female leads, ontop of any actually valid criticisms it may have.
They’re fighting an uphill battle with this one, from pretty much every angle.
It might save time to list the parts of the DCU that worked and were well-received rather than the reverse…
Oh my god I cannot wait to see them fail spectacularly. People are sick of the MCU capeslop already. What in the world makes them think people want more??
Superman was pretty good. If im sick of anything its the MCU. Which is usually OK but its really tapered off from the middle of phase 1. Fantastic 4 and Thunderbolts I enjoyed too but I havent been putting energy into watching whatever else has come out. I kinda lost my interest when they pivoted away from Kang.
I like superheros movies. Ill probably go see this one. I dont ONLY like superhero movies and really can’t buy in for another shared epic. Id like something original. Or at least remade from 50 years or more ago.
Superman hero movies are this generation bond film. You know what you’re getting when you walk in. You’re just there for the ride.
Superman was not a superhero film, it was a manifesto.
Can you elaborate?
My complaint with superhero movies is the same complaint I have with games that have in-game stores with cosmetics but no pay to win stuff. It’s a creativity vampire that crowds out actual content since the goal becomes selling skins and emotes through the shop, so most of the budget goes towards making skins and emotes… And structuring the gameplay, battle passes (🤮), and so on around making money through the shop.
Sure, it doesn’t affect the actual gameplay directly through pay to win, but it certainly affects it due to incentives… Star citizen is a prime example.
Superhero movies have done the same thing. They’re the safe bet so now everything is a superhero movie and any other idea is more risky with less profit potential so it gets cut…
At the beginning of the MCU the biggest movies were the Michael Bay Transformers films. Superhero movies didn’t kill creativity in film. That was already dead. They just stepped into the void that was left behind.
We’ve had capeslop movies for more than a decade now, nearly 2 decades. An entire generation of humans where the biggest thing in theaters is capeslop movie #1173
I also remember it taking years and years for MCU to build up. Avengers didn’t happen until 4 years after Ironman, and there were still great movies being released.
I guess this is pointing at the death of Hollywood from different directions, especially now with streaming services. It’s really unfortunate since foreign films prove that it’s still possible to create incredible movies. It’s just Hollywood wants more growth… The same amount of profit is failure…
I forgot about this! Will go tomorrow night as it’s half price
