The Korean subs advantage was vertical launch cruise missile capability, which is nice, but not a core function. It loses head to head because it would need an unproven Canadianization cold weather package and has limited underwater and stealth run times due to lack of a hydrogen fuel cell. It’s lithium batteries are substantial, but not as proven or as capable. The German subs were the obvious choice for those paying attention.

How major a deal was that, really? 49k cars when we sold 1,918,861 in 2024. (Oh, and significant chunk of those “Chinese” imports are fucking Teslas.)
It was certainly a major PR win for Carney at a time when our anger at the US was boiling over.
The deal was re-opening China to canola and other agricultural sales, not letting in Temu cars.
