      I think it’s their registrars doing, per their registrars docs it’s still “recoverable” for 60 days or something after expiration date, but they can redirect DNS whenever they want

          I tried to talk with the admin to take things over, they gave me some initial info on the costs that they pay but then went silent.

          It also wasn’t really a costs thing iirc, it was mostly burn out from dealing with tankies, trolls and bots (scammers, spammers and scrapers) on top of rising costs

      this happens with pretty much every domain that lapses. the domain is still out there, it doesn’t go away, it just goes into a sort of “holding pattern” until someone decides to buy it again. and usually said holding pattern is some bullshit ad site to try and make a bit of money of a corpse.
