I’ve seen it pop up more in local feeds recently, and the entire community is just one guy posting links to news sites being vaguely critical of the current Liberal admin in ways that aren’t actually critical. To anyone who has had the misfortune of exposure to national and provincial subreddits, this is a hallmark of conservative disinformation campaigns that utilize factual, authority driven news media outlets to platform criticisms which carefully condemn the current admin without introducing systemic criticism that could threaten Con or fascist talking points. They would often post links to say, the CBC or National Post that discusses budgetary or policy scandals, and then when that eventually seems legit enough, they’d just spam headlines about immigrant crime rates or trans pedophiles (I’m lookin at you, r/Ontario). So, the criticism may be that, “the Liberals aren’t doing what they said they’d do,” but that is also a vehicle to suggest that their appropriation of anti-racism or gender equality rhetoric (which they would suggest is genuine anti-racism and gender equality) is also a sign of this failure.
Since these are also posts by one guy, I commented on a post I saw today (linked) to see what would happen, and they predictably responded with some boiler plate occluding Con talking points about how we don’t know why people behave the way they do but we do know that this Carney guy isn’t doing well (which he isn’t). Quick look at their comment history also showed that they comment frequently in ways that supports anti-immigration and pro-capitalism along the lines of “left wing” extremism being a danger.
So, I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this or has more info on this community, and just wanted to warn others before they engage with it and this thing ends up growing.
My perennial fear is that Lemmy.ca becomes a right wing shithole like /r/canada was.
I mean, every community that gets large enough is going to attract those kinds of bots. But also, Lemmy is mostly populated by STEM men the same way Reddit was, and Canadians aren’t especially prone to anti-fascism, and Lemmy.ca is already pretty lib.
So like, I dunno, hope it stays about as small as it is save for an influx of lesbian Arts majors who read Stoler and Wolfe?
Thinking any news is giving unbiased facts is a bit off base. Much of the news is “opinion pieces” anyhow.
Wait, are you suggesting I said objectivity is even real, let alone that I expect news to be “unbiased?”
I don’t care about that, my problem is them being a fascist lmao.
Literally just heard about it because of this post. Foxy is a week old account with poor writing skills.
Which is why I’m fairly confident that the messaging and purposeful occlusion is intentional.
I blocked the guy and the community a while ago. It’s a conveyor belt of inflammatory postings and misinformation.
That checks out.
I think we all have to be very careful of hyperbole and misinformation. I’ve found even in this community some posts will be littered with misinformation. Looks like scary times are here.
No idea, blocked it a while ago.
“Fuck Trudeau” is a decent example of ‘uncritical criticism’. With Carney further right than Harper, what more up their sleeves do Conservative politicians and fans actually have than fringe-ish social conservativism and uncritical criticism of Carney?
