I knew a Chinese guy who was a police officer in China before he left, even he said they were there to keep the people in line.
I think having a long conversation with a Chinese expat would be very enlightening for these people.
They would angrily argue with the Chinese expat about what China is really like.

Didn’t Jackie Chan say something along the lines of the people need to be controlled? I thought this was a pretty widely understood fact. The police are there to keep the population in check.
