I recently moved back from windows to fedora again. (Boo windows, whatever, i was forced to use it for school, and they wouldn’t let me run it in a hypervisor. That’s not the point of the post.)
I don’t pirate software often, but sometimes it’s morally warranted. In this case, the software that i want to use (chessbase) costs upwards of $220 for a license in my country and it’s not even all that great, but FOSS alternatives like en croissant and pawn appetite aren’t too spectacular either. For instance, one issue with both of them is that engines refuse to calculate any set-up position where a king is castled, citing “invalid castling rights.” Unfortunately, because of these kinds of issues, chessbase is still somehow the leading industry standard for localized chess software. I’m not gonna die without a copy of chessbase, but the alternatives are not well maintained and id like to use it to store my PGNs and whatnot, but the price is egregious for what it is.
Now that that’s all out of the way, how has your experience been using windows keygen software and other tools for the seven seas on linux? I haven’t even bothered trying because last time i tried to use bottles for (legal) windows software i ran into issue after issue. All of my piracy has only been committed on windows because i just never really needed to pirate anything on linux and it seemed like a hassle anyway considering illegal software distributions are all made and shipped natively for windows, and linux has free alternatives for almost everything.
So you’re on fedora, is there a specific keygen or cracked version of chessbase you wanna run?
I can make a vm and check it out later on when I get home.
Torrent clients work on everything. We didn’t need VPNs when I used them because nobody cared much back then. Linux works fine, but I hear you need to attach you client to the VPN or you’ll just be exposed. Unrelated to Linux, some people recommend “seed boxes” (cloud server to seed and receive materials), but I don’t know where to get one or what any specifics. I think it might just be a type of VPS.
i have no issue pirating most games and a few apps.
if you’re gonna pirate VST plugins, make sure you have all the essential windows dependencies installed (.NET Framework, Visual C++ Runtime off of the top of my head), but other than that it’s mostly fine. ironically in some cases pirating things are actually the better experience on linux rather than buying the thing legit and trying to install it using hacky workarounds cause the devs of the software did hacky bs. heck i even pirated a vst just to listen to its keygen music. worth it

Hate to be “that guy”, but you can probably make the FOSS alternative work for you. Create a feature/bug issue on the project(s) explaining the problem in detail. It might be easy to fix.
You can also try to fix it yourself, or ask a programmer friend to help. Friends often like helping friends.
For a smaller investment (eg. one month of ChatGPT Plus for Codex, Kimi, whatever) and you can probably fix all the niggly things that you don’t like yourself. Just don’t go opening pull requests for code changes you don’t understand - it won’t be appreciated.
thanks for the reply, but its rather unhelpful. im a FOSS contributor already and frankly this does not address my question at all. i know what i want and why, and nobody here seems to grasp that concept.
also, suggesting to someone who you assumed has no experience with FOSS (given that you felt the need to explain that people are able to contribute to open source software) to ai generate PRs to other peoples projects is quite honestly a deplorable thing to do.

I never tried pirating native linux programs, but windows stuff worked well for me. Use some sort of wine prefix manager for this, like bottles. I used PlayOnLinux, but its an old buggy mess and there are modern alternatives nowadays. There is also umu-launcher and stuff that uses umu, which is more for games, but also works well for programs.
The most trouble I had was with installers and setup tools that need certain files to be in certain locations. There is a mod manager for Dawn of War 2 thats an exe that needs files from an installed game, and it was very bad on linux, with missing fonts and crashes. I got it to work with some fiddling however. On WineDB and ProtonDB there is guaranteed at least one person who had any given problem and has an arcane solution, or at least a bug report with lots of information, so try there if you are stuck. Try your luck with Wine; if that doesn’t work, try Proton by adding it as a game on Steam; if that doesn’t work, try setting it up in a VM.
If you have to use a VM, try
virt-manager. If you have questions about setting it up and getting the best performance, then AI is genuienly really good for that.Other concerns:
It actually sounds like the software you want to pirate provides something no other software does. You also haven’t mentioned why it’s “morally warranted” to pirate it, or why you think the price is “egregious for what it is”. From what I understand it’s not a subscription, and $220 is a pretty standard price for professional software.

thanks for taking the time to respond to my post, i guess ill just start finagling around with it. i normally use steams proton for windows apps anyway. i appreciate the suggestion.
as for the concerns, they don’t need to be addressed here because i am following the ToS in my post and the software itself is not the purpose of the post. ask any tournament level chess player, none of them pay for chessbase for good reasons that i dont need to detail here because it’s irrelevant to the topic.
TBH for me the only proprietary software worth pirating is Apple’s GarageBand. There’s currently no pirated version. I’m hoping that open source alternative continue to improve.
Otherwise there’s nothing proprietary that’s worth pirating for me. I can’t imagine pirating chess. It’s among the most basic apps possible. Have you checked out lichess? The android app is decent, the website looks good, and there’s at least one desktop app too.
Thanks for the reply, but again, very unhelpful. Of course I’ve heard about lichess, it’s my main platform. I’m not looking for lichess. I’m looking for chessbase. You can’t imagine pirating chess software because you don’t seem to be in the chess ecosystem enough to know the differences between the softwares available. Lichess provides a wholly different service than chessbase.
