Yeah. That’s what I mean by melodramatic. The situation is not actually that serious. If this situation is the worst thing to happen to you this week then I’d say you had a good week.

The software contained lies of intentional omission.

People are right to be outraged over being lied to.

Defending liars is a shit take always.

I’m sincere. If you’re experiencing real outrage then you have my sympathy and I do hope you feel better soon. Real outrage is not a fun emotional state to be in.

Just recently I was talking about how, if you’re consistently downvoted, it means you’re in a asshole.

People don’t pile up and downvote kind, well-intentioned people, but they can smell an unwashed asshole from a mile away.

If you’re getting consistently downvoted for your terrible takes, then you should stop doing what it is that you are doing.

Also, like, don’t presume my emotional state. I give no fucks about whatever you have to say.

Fair enough. That was an unkind remark on my part, and your comment does demand a more thorough rebuttal.

The idea that “popular” = “correct” is stupid on its face. Examples predate the internet, abound on the internet, and will continue to arise long after the internet dies. I could go into a white supremacist forum and talk about racial harmony and get downvoted into oblivion, but that wouldn’t make me the asshole. And even if I were the asshole, I wouldn’t be wrong.

Upvotes do not confer moral rectitude. Downvotes are not damnation. And an opinion is not necessarily valid just because it is held by a majority.

And I’m sorry for presuming your emotional state. But if you’re not outraged by this, then why are you arguing that people should be outraged by this?

Don’t you find that to be dismissive? I mean if we’re already deciding for the people who valid their feelings are we could also say the response hasn’t been that harsh because it’s only harassment, it’s not like there’s been an actual murder attempt on the developer. Maybe the developer should also stop being melodramatic?

Or you know, maybe have some empathy and understand that different people can have different emotional reactions to the same thing. I can understand where you’re coming from because I don’t really care either. I think the developer already got told they’re an asshole for doing what they did and for me that’s that. But I also understand not everyone is as unbothered as I am. Some are going to react more strongly and the developer has given them multiple reasons to react that strongly, to the point where the developer has stoked that fire to get an even bigger response. Of course there’s a limit to the reaction, for example death threats and such are a step too far and those shouldn’t be condoned, but I’m not going to act like I know better how someone else should feel about this situation. In the end we’re emotional beings not soulless husks so let people process their emotions.

If we’re going to be dismissive let’s be dismissive. This entire discussion can be summed up as you crying crocodile tears over someone being mean on the internet. You can keep your tears to yourself, we don’t care for your crying.

My dismissiveness is a sincere, considered position

Really? You want to reference any of your previous comments to show where that sincerity and consideration exists?

I went back all the comments to pick one but in the end I found I could point to almost every comment in this tree as an example. In fact I found it easier to point where you came closest to actually being sincere.

If it is malware then harshness is justified, but I’d be willing to debate over the strict definition of malware and whether it technically applies here.

But even that you got ready to reject before you had even finished the sentence and followed up with this.

But I don’t think most of the harshness we’ve seen is actually borne of that kind of outrage.

So please, do point where your sincerity and consideration is.
