This picture was created by (iirc) flash freezing donated brain tissue and using a novel cutting technique to remove a cubic millimetre of tissue while preserving the placement and connections of the neurons in the sample. The sample was then placed in a scanning electron microscope and the resulting data was colour coded to reveal distinct cell types. It is, to my knowledge, the most high definition photo ever taken of neurons in their natural state.
Wait wait wait. They froze ONLY the cells, preserving the empty space between them as empty! An SEM basically makes a physical scan, so you can’t fill the space between cells with anything.
