Your description of the issue lines up with what I was thinking as well, but my friend who has been experiencing the issues, who is also quite technical, immediately assumed it was an issue on my end. I do believe he uses wifi while I do not. I get so much grief for insisting on a wired connection heh.
He can’t really do it because of his home layout until he gets gets conduit installed or the house properly wired up. The internet gateway is on a different floor and a repeater would likely be needed because of the distance. Also cat6 six cables going down split level stairs sounds like trouble. If he had a coax outlet anywhere nearby I’d suggest he look into a MoCa setup which I’ve had decent luck with in the past (better than WiFi, worse than cat6).
I currently use wifi6 because i am too lazy to deal with the cable right now, but i also don’t play online. Would definitely go back to the good old cable when changing that
