If you think the US wanted Ukraine in NATO for the good of the Ukrainian people, you’re delusional.
If the Ukrainians had just been included into NATO, the war would have never happened. That’s because the Russians are rational actors and long-term planners, who recognize a long-term disaster of a military conflict when they see one and always play a conservative, largely non-military game when they can.
The Ukrainians, once included into NATO, would immediately become a net asset for the organization thanks to their large and rapidly growing economy. Their top-tier military would add to the common defense. And it wouldn’t be long before they were inducted into the EU, because Western Europeans love Eastern immigrants and transplants crossing into their country en mass.
I think its abundantly clear that including Ukraine into NATO - and eventually the EU - would be a win-win for everyone involved. Even Russia. And the only reason Ukraine wasn’t added to NATO/EU before the war started is… uh… hmm…
