I think I’m out of the loop, what’s wrong with BlueSky? I don’t even know what the logo on the bottom left is.

False comparison here, most people who use bluesky happily used twitter and left because of Musk not Dorsey. I think most of them just wanted old twitter and migrated to a platform that promised/provided that.

Dorsey actually left BlueSky when he was unable to convince the board to not adopt moderation tools on the platform.

Yeah Dorsey is a piece of shit l, but he’d be leagues better than what we actually have in corporate leadership and governance at Bluesky — they see Bluesky as a “crypto-first” freeze peach platform and are frequently annoyed by the amount of progressives, leftists, socialists, and anarchists on the service.

Dorsey is all those things you just observed about current leadership, and also wanted less moderation capabilities than they do. He wanted Bluesky to be even less moderated than Twitter.

And in spite of the attitudes of the current Blue sky leadership, their moderation tools are pretty decent. Blocking a user there works better than it does in ActivityPub platforms. The blocked user can’t see your profile or posts, at all. Over here a blocked user can still be out replying to everything you post, for all your followers to see. And you can mute/hide replies to your posts on Bluesky, so the rest of the people in the conversation doesn’t see it unless they actively click to show it.

Block in activitypub should called mute. There is no block.

It is on paper. You can host your own PDS (low-resource-requirement server that stores your posts). in practice, well over 90% of users use the default PDS, and even if you don’t, you’re subject to the whims of the relay (big-iron datacenter type server that retrieves posts from every PDS and aggregates them into a single stream for appviews to then display) that other people use to look at your posts. Bluesky is the main relay, and they have been known to censor people for the crimes of speaking out in favor of trans people in sports, or being Palestinian. Blacksky, a competing relay, seems to be a bit better, though I don’t personally know much about it. But the fact remains that running a relay server is really expensive, therefore few people can afford to do it, and a relay server is a gateway through which all posts must pass before they can be seen, therefore it’s a censor’s dream, and those two facts together make Bluesky de facto centralized.

What “regional lock-in” are you talking about? Isn’t all the bluesky tech USAian? Aren’t all the technical decisions made in the US? If they decide to introduce some kind of filtering in the code, is the EU side going to copy-paste the code , remove the offending parts, and then host it? I doubt they’ll be able to keep that up for long. They are facing millions of dollars across the pond.

      Use Mastodon/Sharkey

Fediverse alternative, not connected to nation states or capitalists.

Odd that you wouldn’t want a diversity of voices and backgrounds on your social media platform. Have you thought about about just changing to a diary?

Oh, stop. If you’ve got something to say just say it.

There are a diversity of voices in every community that is open to the public. I would say an even greater diversity in those spaces where people go when they’ve grown fed up with the closed, commercial platforms.

BlueSky itself is still operated and developed by a corporation though, even if an instance isn’t. Thus you’re still beholden to the whims of the people in charge of that.

Its not a Bluesky alternative, its just a different frontend for Bluesky. A good frontend but nothing more.

You have to understand that Zuck didn’t make threads to snag users who objected to him and to Facebook.
