Can’t speak for the conditions of an ICE center, but I can confirm this is standard treatment for a carrier.
And carriers get it good too, theyre much more supplied and maintained than the small boys in the surrounding defensive fleet. After all, thats where any visiting admiral stays.
I remember weeks of dried up old sausages (rat turds) for meals. My LPO was salty af guy, brought his own rice cooker aboard for our shop. Very illegal. But we turned those shitty sausages into something decent with some rice and curry mixes. Other times youre eating unfrotsted cinnamon pop tarts every day. Surviving on sugar carb pastries and spearmint skoal.
Throw in all the other problems, broken heads, dirty clothes…
oh, and youre working ~10-14 hour days, 7 days a week. When they say they haven’t hit a shore leave in 250 days, they mean they’ve been working for 250 days straight, 12 hours a day, no days off. There’s no weekends when youre deployed.
small boys usually get to hit port more often. my six month deployment on an aircraft carrier got 4 of which i got 2 days each limited liberty. the very water poisoned us at one point. and they never let me sleep
