Famine isn’t caused by natural disasters or human caused climate catastrophe. Even then we almost always have a global surplus of food for every human.
Famine is a social problem caused by capitalism and greed.
In a potato field in Yanggu county, 80 miles (130km) north-east of Seoul, Lee Sang-hyuk dug into the soil and found nothing worth saving.
A week earlier the crop, located in Gangwon province, had looked fine. Now the potatoes came up soft and collapsing, “like boiled potatoes”, spoiled by heat that had turned the ground into something closer to an oven.

Consistent heat without being able to cool during night can do that.
Probably time to harvest my potatoes now actually. I don’t know what to really expect. There has been almost no rain since they were planted and only been able to carry water to them occasionally. Maybe I will have some new potatoes out of it at least.
Ffs, nothing I am growing is doing that well except rhubarb which seems to be rather happy actually.
I’ve been considering trying to grow Jerusalem artichoke, apparently it’s almost like a weed in how prolific it is and thrives on neglect. Could be good if you have trouble irrigating your plants
If you do that, I’ve heard growing them in a sunny spot in deep woods keeps them contained. They don’t do well in heavy shade and won’t spread into it.
Im sure you can use that information to passively contain them somehow, based on your own environment :)
I am growing them, they keep looking sad again within a week. Leaves drooping down a lot.
But there has been no rain in almost 2 months so I guess most things would struggle. Just seems like a lot of water I am going through to water everything. 125m² and using a few hundred litres a week.
Edit - Actually given the drought this year is so extreme, probably hasn’t been the best time to get into growing veg. Oh well. At least if this year really is unusually bad then anything to survive this year should do better in future.
Growing up we had a rhubarb plant that we never took care of in any way. Snacked on it every year, and it kept getting bigger somehow.
I was disappointed to learn that giant rhubarb is in fact not rhubarb at all. But I am thinking of growing more regular rhubarb. Got 1 currently. Could comfortably grow 8 of them or probably more. As long as I can make use of it all.
I think with making wine and jam/jelly out of it too, I could justify more space for it. Especially with how its thriving.
