I’ve thought of this, but ultimately think it would be a bad idea. I hate Obama, but he’s likely the best president I’ve had in my lifetime, and might have the best chance of winning. However even if he wins its still setting a precedent that presidents can serve more than 2 terms and will embolden both sides into thinking that the executive branch doesn’t need to follow the law.
It will bite the public in the ass down the road if it happens, Trump has a cult of personality that most presidents don’t have so he has gotten away with things most presidents haven’t. If we allow a democrat to also get away with that much it’ll be the new standard and the republican after Obama will also just do whatever the fuck they want with even less restrictions.
The situation with Trump is that he would be running as the VP and the presidential candidate would concede the presidency to Trump. So all that would really need to be done is to have Obama as the VP, this doesn’t mean he will take the presidency in the same way and likely wouldn’t. It would just be there to show the magats how dumb of an idea this all is and of course get some good clips of Obama directly debating trump on the news in a tan suit.
Doesn’t the 12th amendment prevent that? Because having served two terms makes Trump constitutionally ineligible for the office of President after his term ends, the 12th should make him consequently ineligible for the office of the vice presidency.
Now getting him into the line of succession, and having a few people above him resign, it’s convoluted, but probably isn’t expressly illegal.
It’s a legal grey area. He can’t run for presidency but he can run for VP. It’s unclear legally what happens if for instance a two term president becomes VP and then the current president steps down or dies. The law of succession dictates he would become president but the 12th amendment dictates that he can’t be president. It’s a legal grey area.
Before 1951, presidents used to be able to serve more than two terms. But then the 22nd amendment was ratified so now 2 is the max. But trump and the supreme court and a majority of congress dgaf about the constitution soooooo
I’m down to watch it play out, if Trump attempts to make it a thing.
I expect the biggest barrier would be getting Michelle Obama on board. Word is she HATED her time as First Lady, but now that they’re kids are more grown (seems like they should be done with undergrad college by now?), it might be more feasible.
The way trump is thinking of achieving this third term is running as VP so essentially Obama could do the same but just not have their presidential elect step down. As nice as it would be to have a woman, gay, minority president I’m not sure the US is ready right now. They need a well spoken, quick witted, and vetted old white dude. They keep picking candidates that the American populace at large just aren’t ready for, someone who can swing the vote hard with all these folks leaving the maga movement.
Trump vs Obama 2028?

I’m not sure it would be to win but to just show the magats how stupid this all is.
Whoever the dems run had better be playing to win.
I think Newsom would play to win. His hate for Trump is real.
But he’s also such a centrist corpo fuck. So not really what we need.
