I told my mom (78) a yesterday about how I was talking to my son (8) about climate change. She said “But he’s only 8!” I said “This will affect his entire life, and already is, because it’s so hot he can’t have recess outside.” Politically, she’s no Republican, and she hates Trump, but she still struggles to piece together that we know what’s causing climate change and how to stop it.
We’ve long known the cause of climate change and the effects it will have. I forget which oil company did it, but decades ago the did research discovered it was oil companies and decided to ignore and lie about it.
To add even more background, Eunice Newton Foote discovered the greenhouse effect in 1856. Right there, in the very first scientific paper describing the heat-trapping property of CO2, she predicted global warming. (Other scientists had caught on that atmospheric gases trap heat decades earlier, without being able to know which ones.)
By 1896, Svante Arrhenius had quantified it, actually calculating the increases in temperature due to increases in atmospheric CO2.
The modern petroleum industry appeared around the same time. The oil companies never didn’t know about the connection between oil and climate change.

my grandma gave me a book about climate change when I was your kid’s age; this was back in the 80s, the book was written in the 70s.

We have known about climate change since the Industrial Revolution. Since coal was causing it, before oil was the norm.

Paywalled. But I have seen this clipping for years and never seen anybody claim it wasn’t real.
Snopes isn’t paywalled, and neither is the newspaper archive they link to.
Looks like your adblocker sucks. I’ve uBO on Firefox (Android) and I just see the page normally without ads.
Anyway it just gives some nice background and shows that the text was copied from a Popular Mechanics article:

Exxon
It was Exxon. Here’s the clip.
Did you not know about climate change 8 years ago?
… Should they have been talking to their son as an embryo about it?
They’re saying they shouldn’t have had a child if they knew they were bringing them into a world in decline.
Then they should say that.
Yes?
