I desperately want a D&D based game where I can play single player.
I’d really like something focused on more the open world side, like Realmz was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realmz
But with some of the more modern gameplay elements.
Yeah we need something like Neverwinter Nights with the moddability of Skyrim: something that falls somewhere in that hallowed middle ground between a beautifully designed campaign-in-a-box like Baldur’s Gate, and the silly janky overly melodramatic homemade adventure that only people crazy enough to volunteer to DM could come up with. Design it around the imperative to give the people the tools to make homemade adventures in the style of Baldur’s Gate and it could become the best of both worlds.
From what I recall, Neverwinter Nights was very moddable and accessible.
Sort of, for the time it was alright, it was open and moddable in a modest sense, but not enough to make it seamlessly open-world or anything like that or do anything terribly complex. The engine was very limiting to the kind of modding you could do. Skyrim is a much more capable and modern engine and the kind of mods available for it reflect that. I think by putting both together they better illustrate what I’m hoping to see at some point.
Yeah, but the engine wasn’t great and you couldn’t do much non combat stuff.
What you are describing is pretty much exactly what Realms was. it had a core “campaign in a box” structure (the spider tower story line), but you could totally ignore this and just go faff off and grind goblins and kobalds and explore what I think might have been procedural generated dungeons. Idk. I was very young. But I literally put dollars in an envelope and mailed them off, and weeks later, got scenario unlock keys back.
It would be really cool if you could extend the core world with community contributions or story lines, like extension campaigns or open world scenarios.
