a possibility nobody has mentioned yet: undiagnosed psychosis

though other possibilities like the water tank, a fart, or anything else innocuous are probably more likely

Or any brain-related condition might cause this eerie feeling of uneasiness, that there is someone in the room, auditive hallucinations, etc.

I would check with my doctor next day.

Not even pathological though - exhaustion will do this. I used to be so tired (life situation exhausting) and more than once got up to pee in the night, sat on the toilet but was not completely convinced I was awake not dreaming so couldn’t pee. Dreams intruding on that barely awake state is, I don’t want to say normal, but not unusual either.

It never happens now I am better rested.
