I got an android equivalent of Airtag and a cat collar holder, thinking to check where my cat hangs out when he’s not home. Not on a regular basis, but to let him wear it a few times to get an idea if i ever have to look for him.
My cat doesn’t normally wear any collar, and this collar is a safety release one, so I’m a bit worried it may fall off in one of the neighbours garden, which would be embarrassing to retrieve.
Anyone with experience of using the Tags to track their cat?

Yep, it’s a Samsung something or another that I used a third party app to work with my pixel. The other people are right it’s a Bluetooth tracker and it has a pretty limited range and also it’s pretty bad at telling me where it is so all I can tell is it’s not in my yard and it’s not in her front yard.
Cats belong indoors. That said, I also worry about the release on the collar. But I have been told by many many people to never use a solid collar for a cat. So I guess you’ll have to risk embarrassment for the tracking
How about simply not letting your cat outside without direct supervision? Would you like me to list all the ways your cat, that you apparently love, can die or become so hurt that you have to put them down to ease their suffering?

Have you thought about putting your cat in an induced coma, permanently? It’s the best way to be sure they stay out of harm’s way and live long and happy lives.

I use airtags on my pets. Well, my fiance and my mom do. It works okay. It seems like they have a range and once they move from that it stops. I thought it was supposed to use other iPhones to relay off of but it didnt seem to. We had one of our cats get lost, showed her in the park, she wasnt there. Luckily someone found her and called us, she was across the neighborhood and the airtag didnt update until I was nearly home with her in my lap. So Idk. I think mileage may vary greatly. Cause this doesn’t seem to be everyone’s experience with them but it was mine.
I know the network accuracy was reduced to avoid stalking. So like if the tag is only reported by 1 device, you will not see it’s location. It may also be the reason the reporting is delayed.
The smartphones on the network do it it the background so it does make sense that they’re conserving energy and scan/report infrequently.
I think they have limited range. There are more accurate trackers for farther distances but they are expensive, require subscriptions, and look bulkier because of the battery.
Air tags work via Bluetooth signal and are not as accurate. And only connect within Bluetooth range.
That would make them completely useless. So I don’t believe a word of it.
All the magic of Airtags is in iOS automatically scanning for them and reporting the phone location when an Airtag is detected.
Anyone can move an Airtag undetected, as long as it is shielded from being pinged by Apple devices. Apple will continue to report its last detected location.
Not sure if Google is also playing along.
Yeah you should definitely read people’s reviews. This is why I decided against using them and it’s why the gps tracking ones with a subscription exist.
Because airtags are Bluetooth.
That’s why they can be so small and use such little power.
Still useful to find your keys. Or track luggage if you are at the airport where it is.
It can also keep track of location pings. Meaning you can see where something was the last time it connected.
It’s still useful. It’s just not a gps tracker.
I’m in a housing estate where houses are very close together (terraced) so im hoping the FindMy network will be dense enough to triangulate the position in most places unless he actually wanders off somewhere more remote, like a green space.
