Lots of understandable doom and gloom in the comments, but from the FAQ it really does not seem like the current iteration we know today will be super different down the line. Yes, yes, take Nexus Mods’ word with a mountain of salt, but it really does seem to be helping Nexus Mods’ backend more, and having affiliate links seems to be the least intrusive method to make the site money. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Have to agree with you. While I’m not the biggest fan of Nexus Mods, I do think they’ve improved the modding scene overall. Before Moddb or Nexusmods, it was a total crapshoot whether you were downloading a mod or a virus, and if it was a mod then there was no guarantee that it’d actually work. And at least from my personal experience I’ve been able to do whatever I wanted with only the trouble of creating an account and logging in (which sucks I won’t lie).
That said, I really hope they stick to their announcement and use it to actually make versioning integrate with their mods rather than use this as a cash grab to enshittify.
They write down that the current feature set will not be paywalled but mandatory account registration and paywalling future features are absolutely on the table.
