For completeness, there should probably be an “I know a guy” in the A tier, though admittedly that isn’t really available until you’ve been working for at least a few years.
You’re right - perfectly valid. Along with “A guy I went to college with works there now.” And then “My Dad knows a guy there” around the A bucket.

I would love to see one of those sankey diagrams about job applications except it’s some dude walking into local businesses everyday to do the firm handshake and insist that he would be the greatest employee they will ever have.
And then, because I am a scientist, repeat the experiment with the same dude but dressed like a slob, with a woman, same lady except dressed like a slob, etc
And then do a small paper on the sociology of the interactions and how hiring managers innate biases might impact getting hired.
A tier may have to be “I used to work with the guy”
I actually got what I would consider A tier for my first job. I walked into the local pizzeria, they handed me a job form, I completed it and gave it back, then the owner of the pizzeria did my interview right then and there, and I started working the next day.
That guy gave me a glimpse of what the “good ole days” must’ve felt like.
I’ve known a few coworkers throughout the years who have reached out after they left where we worked “hey man it’s better over here.” put in a good word for me and boom.
not sure if that is A or B though. all corporate jobs.
My first job was “my dad knows a guy” (that guy really fought for me at that company and that turned out great for everyone) and from then on almost every job was through a former coworker. Have returned the favour a few times.
