I am not sure I understand the negative criticism?

The joke is that this is the one place where an AI voice makes perfect sense because the character is an artificial intelligence.

The “joke” is the “cultural appropriation” bit, which is either…

      A) A shitty joke making fun of cultural appropriation as a thing to get mad about, or…

      B) An attempt to sound “politically correct” by someone who has no fucking clue what “culturual appropriation” means (hint: you have to have a culture for it to be appropriated).

Both make them look like assholes.

I dunno, I feel like “cultural appropriation” itself has been appropriated by people who are more against multiculturalism and mingling of ideas from many cultures than concerned about the culture losing anything. It’s kinda like “woke” at this point where it doesn’t really have a clear meaning but changes depending on who is using it.

Though I also reject the idea that any person or people can “own” or monopolize ideas and styles and that there’s anything wrong about others adopting them from outside their culture of origin, though they should be honest about it, like that the wood carvings they are trying to sell were mass produced in China and weren’t made by natives who wouldn’t back the claims about how it can improve your life even if they had made it. Also, it’s different if a style is adopted just for the sake of mockery and hatred.

Though based on the follow up messages in the OP, it looks like they are either really committed to the bit or are being serious, which is ridiculous.

    Saved you a click:

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

In-game AI character Ms. Second is using AI generated voice. Using humans voices for AI character would be cultural appropriation.

Never knew about this game, probably most people didn’t. They probably knew it too, so they needed to expand the visibility with something edgy and started sending review keys to AI-haters for reaction. Seems like it worked, such an obvious trap.

Sometimes people try to make a joke and they miss. I don’t think i would assume malice without additional red flags.

It does raise the issue that if you want to use a synth voice for a robot, are people going to skip your game just because of the AI disclosure without reading it? I can understand why they would be nervous about it.

Update - 10:39 UTC - Gaijin replied and simply said:
“We do not use generative AI for anything other than for Ms. Second. And even there, the choice is deliberate: we use an AI-generated voice not to cut costs, or speed up production, but because we see it as a postmodern artistic statement – an AI character quite literally speaking with an AI-generated voice”

Update #2 - 13:04 UTC - Gaijin followed up to say:
“In other words, we think AI should be voiced by AI - not to offend AI. This feels especially important nowadays, with AGI almost here. That’s all we can say, unpacking the whole AI cultural narrative isn’t really our place.”

No, it’s even stupider than a bad joke - these are roku’s basilisk idiots.

“there’s no such thing as God and the devil, and you’re an idiot for believing that. Now excuse me while I try to live my life under the assumption I’ll either be tortured or rewarded for all eternity by a vengeful omnipotent AI.”

I don’t even think it missed. It’s mildly amusing. I don’t get why people are up in arms about it.

Oh look someone screeching over minor inconsequential shit.

Progressives can’t take a swing going in their direction.
