Saudi Arabia has said it will not retaliate and wants Iraq to "take the necessary measures." Baghdad is under pressure from the United States to rein in Iran-backed militias.
Absolutely wild that militias have so much fire power in Iraq. Seems like those Iraqis didn’t get the memo the first 2 times. Hey USA, 3rd time’s a charm 😂
Iraq fundamentally doesn’t have the power to control its entire territory so it has to pick the least bad option for who to allow to occupy some areas. And considering that one option is ISIS, most of the others start looking a lot more appealing by comparison.
Funny you mention that. Apparently, the president vetoed the previous PM pick for Iraq, (they were given a weak parlimentary system to prevent a strongman taking over, just as we did with Japan and Germany,) and orchestrated this newer guy getting in.
The newer guy just went on a purge of the elite, targeting the shia iranian connected elite.
The Iraqi PM is the president’s bitch. The US will only need to help them with ntel. Normally an airstrike or two but they are stretched thin.
It was inevitable, and predicted by the learned arguing against the Iraq war actually. Invading would open it up to factionalism, and empower Iran, as Iraq and Iran were mortal enemies after having fought one of the bloodiest wars in history, the Iran Iraq war, in which over a million were killed. (The US played both sides, providing weapons and intel and such, we also orchestrated Saddam taking power, but that’s another story.)
Saddam was fond of human wave attacks, WWI style. The Iranians weren’t all that much better either.
To make matters worse, after they declared mission accomplished after their shock and awe bullshit weeks after the start of the war, they disbanded the security forces, to De-Baath-ify the country, de baath party that is, and that sent the country into a violence spiral, also dumping all of those security dudes onto the streets, all heavily armed.

Lol won’t stop the USA from taking a little expedition

Yeah because it worked so well last time.
