Does anybody know that one movie where they throw grave dirt in front of a vampire to keep him busy and he counts it before it even hits the ground?

I never saw that, but I have seen Hong Kong vampire movies where the undead can only move by hopping.

[off topic] ‘Anno Dracula’ by Kim Newman is the first book in a series where Dracula kills van Helsing and marries Queen Victoria. Now Prince Consort, Vlad ushers in a new age of undead terror. The novel features characters like the Elephant Man, Mycroft Holmes, and other contemporary literary characters. The series moves forward in time with ‘The Bloody Red Baron’ [WW1] and ‘Johnny Alucard’ [1970s]

What’s your recommendation for someone who’s never seen a Hong Kong vampire movie?

There’s an X-Files where they have to count seeds.

The X Files had an episode like that. It was pretty funny.

Not sure it would be dirt. More likely to be small distinct things like seeds or rice.

When you place dirt from their grave in front of them the undead are forced to count the grains.

I think you are conflating a few different bits of lore.

        It was mustard seeds:

Strange. Why would that even work?

EDIT: Checks out, Macedonian Folklore published in 1903 cites it as an old Greek folklore. https://archive.org/details/macedonianfolkl01abbogoog/page/218/mode/2up?q=count
