I like the concept here, but it doesn’t address the big gotcha that I found out when I setup my own lemmy instance is that you can’t federate to all the different instances that support activitypub. I can’t use my lemmy account to post on mastadon or loops.video or pixelfed, or etc. you still need separate accounts on each instance. Maybe someday they will all talk to each other but at the moment it is certainly mildly annoying.

      The issue isn’t instances.

The issue is that Lemmy isn’t designed for interaction with single actors, e.g. Mastodon users or PeerTube channels. Lemmy can only interact with groups, and that’s by design because it’s a purist Reddit/Hacker News clone.

If you have one account someplace that isn’t Lemmy or Mbin (or something similarly specialised), you can connect to and interact with just about everything everywhere.

That’s because Mastodon, PixelFed, Lemmy etc etc are different services based on ActivityPub, they aren’t instances of the same thing; what you want is a software that can communicate with Mastodon, PixelFed and Lemmy

TL;DR: the softwares themselves have to be made in a way to be compatible with eachothers, eg: Lemmy and PieFed works with eachother or you can also use Mastodon to interact with Lemmy (but not viceversa IIRC) too

Youre probably looking more for something like the atmosphere (bluesky network) where you have one identity for every app.

But as the other guy said definitely in an ideal world everything communicates with everything cleanly.
