Pretty weird to read the author’s joy of pre-AI coding, their concerns about what’s happened over the last few years to open source and public repo management, have them laser-focus on exactly where it all went wrong… and then at 2/3rds though the article go, “oh btw I use AI constantly and I’m not changing, and I don’t suggest anyone change. Its just such damn shame, I can’t think of a solution”.
Solution is right there, friend.
Return to monke.
Ban the slop on your repos (as many projects have). Go back to using your brain. Go back to enjoying coding, and the community of coding with others through open source.
Open source needs a better license. Big corporations just take and take and rarely ever give anything back, it’s not sustainable.
The point of Open-Source is to allow that. This is what differentiates Open-Source from Free Software and why people invented the term and founded the organisation behind it.
The Free Software side of things did improve on licensing with the AGPL.
if you change that then its not ooensource. you have the freedom to create any license you want but restrictions on use is no longer open.
The point of open source is that the user can use it for whatever they want, any restriction would eliminate this.
corporations are not people
where did I mention people?
users are people
Copyright probably won’t fix it, especially now that you can Malus yourself a bespoke fork.
The core problem is that they’re too big to care. They don’t have to listen to customers, employees, or competitors. We need antitrust action and union organizing.
The project I’m working on has had regular discussion about whether we should move from our email list and patch workflow to a more PR focused approach for a number of years now. Something that works for us greybeards is anathema to younger engineers who grew up on GitHub.
I suspect the current slopocolypse is going to delay that move for a few more years until this wave of disruption has settled down.
If they decide to move, don’t go to Github. Quality has gone downhill there.
They hide the issues from https://www.githubstatus.com/
But this is happening right now: https://discourse.llvm.org/t/psa-project-wide-issue-with-merging-pull-requests-in-the-github-ui/91974
Codeberg/forgejo is like github but better. Its crazy
