Uh, yeah? They can kill pets for getting in the way, target you if you’re the wrong skin color, or risk collateral damage should they be too trigger happy. Robbers won’t want to stick around, and someone just looking to hurt you (rare af) can be dealt with more quickly by neighbors if you live in an urban environment. As soon as hostility becomes too costly, almost any random threat will run.
I’m sorry if your world is all mad max lawlessness but in my world this is how I’ve successfully gone about things: Intruder in house > call 911 > police come & file a report > eventually get a warrant for the intruder’s arrest > intruder eventually gets apprehended & removed from society. Peace restored.

And don’t watch the news too much because that makes people live in paranoia that the whole world is going up in flames. It’s really not.
