A YouTuber built a cop-watching license-plate system, then police knocked on his door asking what he planned to do with the data.

Would be pretty cool if we could build a crowdsourced network of these that do basically exactly what flock does, but just to keep a constantly updated public database of the location of all cop cars, hopefully with the ability to associate cars to specific officers with names, photos and badge numbers.

We could call them “drove cameras.” A drove is a term that refers to a group of pigs.

    • If they’re innocent they have nothing to worry about or hide
    • This will help prove their innocence if suspected of any wrongdoing
    • It’s public information
    • It’s not illegal
    • He’s not tracking the police officers, just their vehicles
    • When you’re in public you have no reasonable right to privacy

I’m sure I missed some BS excuses used against citizens.

If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear, and other similar sentiments:

Actually, when they’re observing your behavior, anything you do is suspicious. Not suspicious of a specific crime, but suspicious generally, and they will use this to invoke probable cause and search you or investigate you.

And they will find crimes. Stupid, petty infractions that shouldn’t be crimes, but they’ll find them. Or if they don’t like your social media opinions, they’ll make some up.

And they will rob you of any liquid assets (or sufficiently liquefiable assets, or anything else on you they want. And they’ll justify it as asset forfeiture. And it will be very difficult to get it back.

So, every citizen has a terrible lot to fear just by being observed by law enforcement. And mass surveillance, such as ALPRs, keeps you in their view.

Another point: Everybody has something to hide from somebody. No matter who you are or what you believe, there’s somebody who wants you dead for it.

I believe the answer is “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you shouldn’t be concerned.” Or you could use the reason given by police for their searches, “LMAO”.

Ah I didn’t see that, might have been blocked by my ad blocker. Still found it weird how it just kept referring to “a YouTuber” instead of saying his name.

If you drive in an area covered by an ALPR-networked camera, your vehicle’s movements may already be in a searchable database. As the tools for building these systems become more widely available, the pressure for clearer rules about who may collect vehicle-location data, on whom, and for how long is unlikely to ease

Two website to be stay informed where these cameras are located in your neighbor and province.

    https://maps.panopti.ca/?lat=43.7873&lng=-79.5500&zoom=10.24

    https://flockcameralocations.com/locations/canada

The fivty camera in Brampton are already operational since March 2026 from what I can gather. Not to mention the countless others spread around the province.
