UK: “Successful engagement with China must always be framed by an understanding that China is an inherently hostile authoritarian state that does not share our values”, report says
“The PRC [People’s Republic of China] is not China, nor the custodian of Chinese history, culture or values. What it promotes, whether on UK universities campuses through Confucius Institutes, through “art and cultural” engagement, through social media and through personal exchange, is political narrative,” a report published by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (Ipac), an international group of China experts, says.
For many years UK China policy has been ‘beset by incoherence,’ with different departments pursuing mutually contradictory approaches. As a result, Ipac states, past engagement with Beijing has often “exposed the UK to the risks of interference without delivering the opportunities promised.”
Although British expertise exists, it is often siloed and “not translated into capability”, says Ipac, pointing to budget cuts as an additional problem.
The organization’s report says that engagement with China ‘must rise above party politics.’
‘The elected government should work with other parties in Parliament to determine the UK’s long-term relationship with China. We need sustained cross-party dialogue, and a shared commitment to putting the UK’s long-term interests first. Whatever our political differences, we should recognise that the opportunities and risks presented by China demand a united and considered national response.’

Ipac counts almost 50 MPs among its members, including from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National party, the Greens and Reform.

unlike our crushing of antizionist protests and arrests of students engaged in them
IMO the best way to deal with China is to make the relationship transactional and based on reciprocity. They should get the same access they give others and not a milometer more.
If foreign companies cannot do something in China, Chinese companies should not be allowed to do it outside of China.
If foreign institutions cannot discuss history openly in China (Tienanmen Square Tank man says hi), then PRC proxies like the Confucius Institute, shouldn’t get privileged access to anything - at the end of the day the west still needs to stand by its principles, but no one has the right to a podium.
The West principles is supporting neocolonialism and genocides
Like the colonialism of the One China policy and their genocide of the uyghurs?
I am not saying that China is not doing evil things and I oppose China coercion to take Taiwan back. There are definitely war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Uyghurs but the intent to destroy a group fully or in part was never proven.
Nobody is more hypocritical than the west though and nobody lie more about respecting human rights than the west , the west destabilization of the world is a lot worse than China. The former western colonial powers turned into neo colonialism, most of the conflicts in africa are fueled by the west weaponry, the west also destroyed Libya despite many of the western leaders having good relation with Gaddafi before , they fully support israel colonial ambition then claim to oppose it by doing very performative actions like banning the settler products with no verification , Israel can simply reroute to Israel than claim it is not coming from the west bank. Even related to china, you don’t hear about china support for the Rohingya genocide, you can hear about the Tiananmen Square protests but you don’t hear about multiples other crackdown on protests like the 1989 Lhasa martial law in Tibet or the 1997 Yining crackdown in Xinjiang that the west turned a blind eye because it happened before China became an economical threat to the west hegemony
I was talking about freedom of speech. But if you want to bring whataboutism to the conversation, China is perfectly aligned with the worst of the worst western countries on both of those topics.
Whataboutism is hypocrites favorite word. No, showing that the UK is hypocritical and claim to respect human rights and freedom of speech is not whataboutism
Kidnapping people for saying I support Palestine action is what you called freedom of speech? Or maybe we should mentions some protests that was violently cracked down by the fascist polices? Bloody Sunday, The Poll Tax Riot, The Battle of Orgreave , Student Fees Protests
Once the system itself is challenged , western countries shows their true colors
Unlike China of course, which engages in…
checks notes
Planning of a colonialist invasion of Taiwan, and a genocide of Uyghurs in Xinjiang

Chinese crimes GOOD
Western crimes BAD
Chinese crimes bad , western crimes bad. Western criminals claiming to not be criminals while complaining about other criminals is hypocrisy.Hypocrites are the worse and you are defending western hypocrisy. While me, I didn’t deny anything bad china did
the west still needs to stand by its principles, but no one has the right to a podium.
What principles? Fuck everyone get money?
UK upset that China doesn’t support their colonialist, genocidal and monarchical child fucking values?
Big compliment to China coming from the UK.
Judging by Britain’s arresting and charging old ladies as “Terrorist Supporters” for demonstrating against Genocide as well as banning works from pro-Palestine book writers and the current anti-demonstration laws in Britain, especially the stuff enacted in the last decade, it seems to me that they definitely have a lot of “values” shared with China - certainly their perspectives on Political Freedom are getting pretty close, mainly because of increasing authoritarianism in Britain rather than any change in China - tough, granted, looking at the number of wars of invasion each country participated in during the last couple of decades, even in the XXI century Britain is a lot more Imperialist than China.
Damn, if only someone knew about this in '01 when China joined the WTO.
India too.
I went into learning about India’s history looking for positive things about it and came out of the experience sickened. India’s culture is corrupt and evil, in many ways much like China. I suspect it has something to do with a massive population being inherently hyper-competitive and nepotistic. These qualities aren’t absent from the Western Worlds ideologies, governments or economic systems but they aren’t as rampant as in the Eastern Worlds cultures.
I’m all for accepting people of other cultures on a case-by-case basis (so I admit there are good people from India and China that I’d welcome) but as a whole these cultures and governments are bad news and should be treated as hostile belligerents.
