If you don’t open the article, the exploit was patched and plex sent out emails on September 1st saying to update as a heads up.
ITT: I use
ArchJellyfin btw.Every single Plex thread has the same annoying smug commentary from Jellyfin users.

Interesting shift. It’s usually the plex users who are smug.
Heavily disagree. Plex users are more absent minded and don’t really care as long as it works, that’s why they’re still on Plex lol
after upgrading and doing the key rotations and such - i also turned off remote access. except now my rokus, on local lan, cannot access my plex svr.
seem to be getting pointed in the direction that i need plex pass for this? or to allow ips / mask to have login unauth…
freaking odd.
now turning remote back on doesn’t stick. that’s a plex pass thing? remote access?
i might try jellyfin just because of plex annoyances.
The fragility of local streaming without internet, even with a lifetime pass, is why I left Plex.
As soon as dolby vision is fixed in jellyfin for android tv I’ll switch
I don’t have any issues with DV on android TV with jellyfin ? What do you encounter ??
Jellyfin just won’t play dolby vision 4k Blu-ray rips and falls back to hdr, a fix is in beta last i checked
Glad I moved to Jellyfin for unrelated reasons. (Plex don’t give a shit about their users, was my main gripe. Well, byyye 👋)
Plex enshittified too much to be useable, I ended switching to jellyfin too last year
Welcome to the family, pal
Surely a me thing, but twice I’ve installed Jellyfin but couldn’t get my pc to see folders on the server, when trying to use my pc as the server for my content (only local viewing from my pc).
If I could work out how, I’d have switched.
Surely a permissions issue?
I’m always amazed to see there are people still using Plex.
I’m always amazed to see there are people still using Plex.
I’m always amazed when Jellyfin users lack the minimum critical thinking to see that there are valid reasons for that
I didn’t mention Jellyfin, there are other options that just the two ya know? My amazement comes from the fact that Plex, as a corporation, has consistently shown that they hate their own customers. I am equally surprised when I see people still use products by Microsoft, Google, META, Etc, however Plex is particularly perplexing (pun intended), as their core users are not the “general public” but rather a slightly more technically minded subset that should be more adept at seeing the better alternatives.
Call it smugness if you wish though
The thing is it still works though. I paid for a license, it still works, so why would I switch? Do I wish they would actually add features to the core media server and not just their attempts at capitalization? Sure, I would. Does the fact they don’t inhibit my ability to use it? No
at seeing the better alternatives
As for example? A mediaserver that allows remote streaming without installing elaborate vpn schemes, whose media matching works reliably and that enables me to use hardware encoding for multiple 4k streams?
I’m going to shill any particular media server, I’m sure you’re perfectly capable of comparing and selecting on your own, nor an I trying to suggest that any will have the same feature set or all the features you wish for out of the box. I’m only expressing surprise that people, particularly people in the homelabbing/self-hosting community, are still using a product like Plex
My TV has a plax app. It doesn’t have a jellyfin app.
I have a lifetime pass and there is remote streaming without needing to setup of a bunch of technical stuff for me and my user base. If I was only using for myself, I’d use jellyfin, but I have over a dozen users that aren’t going to setup tailscale or something similar to access it. Also, I’ve personally never had any issues with the platform. Yes it’s enshittifying, but it hasn’t reached a threshold where I need to do something about it.
This is completely reasonable, and I’m not sure why it has to be explained in every single thread about Plex.
Because Jellyfin users need to feel smug for some reason
Alot of Lemmy users are like this

You have a lifetime pass for now.
Edit: Sorry to break the bad news to some of you, but software companies cancel “lifetime” licenses with both contempt and impunity.
I hate this argument. Why should anyone quit using something that works perfectly fine just because a company might do something someday?
Jellyfin isn’t going to suddenly be unavailable the day plex changes its service.
Let people use what they paid for, and switch IF that ever comes up. It’s obviously working for them.
I hate that argument too. Looking at the text of the comment you replied to, I don’t know where you saw it.
Edit: Can some neurotypical person please explain why the fuck I am getting downvoted?
Me too, I guess daring to offend the great Plex gods gets on peoples nerves.
Oh, yes, that’s probably what it is. Thank you.
FWIW I used Plex before and it seemed fine and I´d understand the inertia to move off of it. I just sort of got started again after exhausting the local thrift stores of DVDs I wanted, so I decided to start on a path with a better future, so Jellyfin it was.
Because “I hate that argument too” could be referring to you hating the argument that you replied to, not that you also hate the argument of the person above them. Maybe saying “I agree” would have been more clear.
“I hate that argument too” is “I also hate that argument” which is the same thing as “I hate the same argument that you hate, the one you just said that I’m directly replying to” which is the same as “I agree.”
Literacy crisis is real.
Edit: But thanks for explaining it, though I find it unconvincing. Do people really not know how to read “too” in this context? And with such confidence to downvote?
When they do, I’m not giving them a single cent anymore.
Yeah, the lack of streaming proxy seems to be the only real killer feature that Plex has.
Tools like Netbird makes setting that up so easy though, it’s not nearly as painful as older tools like Tailscale and ZeroTier. Even my mom was able to set it up on her devices.
Yeah. I’m only torn between Jellyfin and Emby. Emby seems to handle hardware acceleranion better without any additional setup and I find the automatic identification of my media really inconsistent between them. Sometimes I get fed up with one and move to the other and everything is automatically detected. Then as I slowly add stuff things are no longer automatically detected well. I move back to the other one and I find that lots of things aren’t automatically detected.
Jellyfin, go with Jellyfin. If your find yourself switching between something open and something closed, the openness should be the tipping factor. ❤️
I’ve been on Jellyfin for several years and have never had it fail to identify anything, but then again most of my media is fairly typical/pedestrian, so maybe if you have some more niche media.
Sometimes auto identity doesn’t work on Jellyfin, but it’s not too hard to update it. You sound like you’re running a server for a family. I don’t really add often enough to sweat the occassional manual ID.
I don’t run a server for a family. I have about 7 TB of movies, TV series, and anime. It isn’t hard but one of the primary jobs is that it discovers my media, identifies it, and makes it available. When it identifies things incorrectly or doesn’t identify them at all and I see 10 of the same thing instead of one with 10 seasons it’s a bit of a nuisance.
It is still a relatively first world problem but I wish it did a better job more consistently.Jellyfin basically only uses TMDB by default as a metadata provider. I think IMDB enshittified or something like Reddit did.
TMDB is a lot less mature than IMDB so sometimes the identification isn’t as good. It’s based on user contributions like Wikipedia. It also has “opinions” about the correct episode and season listings of TV shows, which has caused me big headaches in the past.
You can enable optional plugins in the dashboard to enable other metadata providers like TVDB and Anime DB and more. I decided to just use TMDB and go update the website myself when I notice anything wrong or missing.
Jellyfin is also much less forgiving of errors… like if you put an episode in the wrong season it will just appear broken
Purely based on your last comment on 10 seasons, it might be a problem with your folder structure. Take a look at the official documentation or trash guides if you haven’t done so already. Are you only using jellyfin or the arr stack as well?
