Or unless you have a nvidia graphics card, or use programs/play games that Wine doesn’t support properly yet, or have peripherals that don’t have good driver support on Linux.
I use an Nvidia card (RTX 4080) on my Bazzite PC and have almost no issues with anything from AAA games to obscure old/indie games. My issue is that I’m struggling to get FL Studio and its plugins running properly in Wine. I still have a MacBook Air for that, but would much prefer my desktop.
As someone who actually used desktop Linux back then it was damned annoying to get flash working, not to mention the nightmare of WiFi…
You also needed to download a third party pack of software to play MP3s, and I remember being pissed off at Linux back in 2009 when it hadn’t downloaded libdvdcss when I had installed VLC before going on a trip, and VLC refused to play a few DVDs I had brought with me.
I would say that Linux became significantly simpler sometime around 2018 or so.
Yeah I don’t think I would’ve been using it in 2004, though Ubuntu was going strong in my university physics department in 2006. I found Linux working really efficiently 2020-ish and I don’t have a single windows system now.
Daily reminder that Linux is a very simple alternative since 2004 (thanks
ObamaUbuntu) and you don’t need Windows anymore unless you use it at work.Or unless you have a nvidia graphics card, or use programs/play games that Wine doesn’t support properly yet, or have peripherals that don’t have good driver support on Linux.
I use a 3070 and 4070 no issues for the past 3 years…
