You Can See Everything is the movie event of the fall. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary has proved to be a potent mixture of zeitgeisty cultural insight and its own discourse-generating machine about the value and nature of documentary filmmaking. The screenings have been sold out and everyone wants to discuss and argue about each scene in minute detail. It is a testament to the film that even given a three-hour runtime, basically every moment feels like it could be ripped out and discussed as though it were the skeleton key for the entire premise. But there is one particular scene that I can’t let go of, and that I really feel needs to be examined at length in order to unearth certain truths about the film and the participants involved. That is the scene in which Billy Evans, Elizabeth Holmes’s partner and the father of her two children, shows hog.

To pull the full quote from the interview linked in the article,

    Zack Hauptman, GQ interviewer,

I also have to ask about the shower scene. You literally can see everything! How and why did Billy agree to be naked in this movie?

    Lance Oppenheim,

I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. It’s beyond me, but I’ve heard interesting theories that people have when they see it. I mean, in terms of the way the moment was captured, it’s sort of how you see it. There’s a camera in the bathroom, there’s a camera that was on Nathan, there’s a camera outside the bathroom, and there’s an interaction that we see after Billy leaves where he sort of looks at the camera and smiles. So I don’t know what that means, but I feel like there’s enough stuff in there that gives me the impression that maybe he was excited that people could see everything and that there was full access, I guess. But it really beats me, honestly. We were in the car ride on the way back from the gym and I said to Billy, “We will give you some time to shower.” And Billy responded, “Want to film me showering?” I offered to film him in a way that could avoid seeing his genitals, but Billy said he didn’t care about being seen naked.

I think it’s a bit of Billy allowing the documentarians to “See Everything” and show that he and Elizabeth aren’t hiding anything.

I think it’s also control. Billy showing his genitals is, in his mind, an “alpha” move and will give him control. He isn’t asked to show his genitals, he offers them. He is in charge of what will and will not be in the documentary. (At least so he thinks.)
