The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.

I mean, that’s capitalism. It was inevitable. A similar fate will befall Lemmy at some point, so enjoy it while you can.

With all due respect to you and the user above as people, fuck the defeatist attitudes. We’re going to make and keep this little part of the Internet fun, no matter what corporations say. I’ve had a great 3.5 years on Lemmy despite the occasional dramatic event. And I’m counting on myself and every one of us to continue to make it so.

Entropy is also inevitable, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep a small space of less entropy than average while we’re here.

      press x to doubt.

Seriously, there’s a low chance for that.

      • lemmy is not a service but an open source software
      • public lemmy services are ran like a “public service”, for the benefit of the public. an instance cannot just lock down its access to users without exiting the federation. and if it exits the federation, it will become worthless basically, as they’ll lose all the external content. yes lemmy.ml and lemmy.world are too big, which is a problem, but I don’t think they could pull it off easily either.
      • lemmy developers are loudly marxist, they oppose capitalism. so both the software itself, and the lemmy.ml instance are unlikely to change in the way you tell
