The Jevons paradox or Jevons effect is an economic phenomenon said to occur when technological improvements that increase the efficiency of a resource’s use lead to a rise, rather than a fall, in total consumption of that resource. Greater efficiency reduces the amount of the resource needed per application, lowering its effective cost; if demand is sufficiently price elastic, this induces demand, frequently resulting in a net increase of total resource consumption.
In 1865, the English economist William Stanley Jevons observed that technological improvements that increased the efficiency of coal use led to the increased consumption of coal in a wide range of industries. He argued that, contrary to common intuition, technological progress could not be relied upon to reduce fuel consumption.
No no no, adding more lanes will solve the traffic problem

sorry i forgot the rules in this comm; i edited the post to put just the article title as the post title and quote the first two paragraphs in the post body

the interestingness seems self-evident in this case, but what caused me to post it specifically now was being reminded of it by a comment which mentioned it recently (which i can’t find now) which pointed out that as LLMs become more efficient, it’s unlikely that will lead to a reduction in overall power consumption as the increase in use of them will outpace the efficiency improvements.
While failing to find that comment I just found another one citing Jevon’s paradox in the context of cost and demand for software development.

seems like I edited my comment while you were posting yours. I was about to edit the sidebar when I saw that @cm0002@no.lastname.nz too does post citations as titles. Considering that you’re the most frequent posters of the comm, I thought, i should follow. I won’t be bugging you about the titles from now on. Do as you wish :)

Context
Why am I cross-posting .ml content?
I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitalize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don’t want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.
Megathread on the issue (new megathread)
Some highlights from the link:

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can’t even put them all here because this comment would be really long.
I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda
On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like “Lemmy? Isn’t that the place with a bunch of tankies?” Or “Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left”. The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.
